Blackberry 8800 – How to install a microSD card – Step-by-Step

As I mentioned, there are most likely a barrage of Blackberry 8800 guides and tutorials coming up, given that I just got my hands on this neat new device. In this case, the new Blackberry 8800 supports mass storage devices, and specifically a compatible microSD (micro SD, not miniSD) or TransFlash compatible card. Most of these cards come with a standard SD adapter, and I happened to pick this 1.0GB SanDisk card up from Staples for $24.95 – not a bad deal!

Putting the microSD card is a pretty straight forward exercise, and in many cases should be able to be done without this tutorial. However, I have become a little camera happy with the new found device – so, enjoy!

Here is the step-by-step:

1. Slide the back cover casing from the Blackberry 8800 series by pushing the silver Blackberry logo on the back and sliding down.

2. Open up the microSD holder by sliding the locking mechanism towards the battery and then flipping the casing upwards. Note that your battery does not have to be removed or your Blackberry be turned off for you to complete this guide.

3. Make sure you have the microSD (micro SD) card ready to install.

4. Insert the microSD card with the metal contacts facing towards you exposed and so the contacts are at the base of the connector.

5. Rotate the microSD connector back to the unit and slide upwards towards the unit to lock the microSD card into your Blackberry 8800 series.

6. Replace the cover on your Blackberry 800.

7. The next time you connect your Blackberry 8800, you will be prompted whether to enable the advice as a mass storage device. If you choose yes, then your microSD card will be seeing by your operating system as an additional drive. This means that you can transfer files back and forth through Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Vista without having to use the Blackberry Desktop Manager. The recommended response is yes.

Congratulations, you have completed this guide!

Thanks for the how-to, else I would have broken either the clip or the cover trying to force the card in.

Thanks so much! I would never have figured out how to install this without your help!

Somehow I just couldn't get the hang of this install.
Thanks for the guidance!

Thanks, very helpful. However, I did not get the screen (post-install) asking whether to turn on mass storage mode. So I went to "options" (the wrench) and selected "media card." It says "Mass Storage Mode Support - On." I'm assuming this is OK?

In any event, thanks for the clear step-by-step instructions.

i too was getting very frustrated with this. i actually broke the metal bracket that covers the sd card, but managed to put it back. your instructions showed me that i wasn't too far off, but far enough to possibly cause damage to my device. anyways, thanks for the info.

WOW!! I too nearly broke the cover and damaged the card. The user manual didn't say how (at least it didn't come up when I searched the PDF for microsd).

Thank you, thank you!!!

Oh man, this saved my hide trying to put the card into my Pearl. I very nearly broke the bracket...

Unbelievable! I almost broke the little bracket too - one hinge came off, but I was able to pop it back in. Why is it not obvious that the card slides into the metal lid instead of laying in the base???? Oh well, thanks for your awesome instructions! :-)

WOW - I would not have got this w/o this post - SLIDE into metal Bracket upside DOWN, then flip, then lock - I would JAMMING IT into slot and trying to close metal swinging gate - WRONG - Thanks for this BLOG !!!!!

Thank you so much!!

Thank you (and thanks for the internet)! I would not have figured this out on my own.

The Blackberry designers are morons to design the microSD card slot this way. They should just have had a slide in slot that has a push release that pops the card inside and out like most other PDAs.
I'd like to meet the genius at Blackberry who came up with this "brilliant" (NOT !) design...

As of 06-10-08, Costco has two 2gb Sandisk cards for ~$34 (there is a coupon for $8 off, so two for 26+tax). Your walkthru was great!

I was having a hell of a time putting the card in. For some reason I didnt think to put the card in and then flip down. You saved me a headache!

I just used this guide to put in my new $8 2GB MicroSD chip into my 8800. Thanks!

Very helpful, thanks so much. FYI, you can get an 8GB MicroSD card from Amazon for ~$30. Just got mine (SANDisk) and it was detected with no problems.

This is so helpful. I played around for an hour with this thing before googling you. Excellent work!

thank you!! the pics and directions were perfect! Like everyone, I almost broke mine!

If the metal bracket comes off does that mean it's broken? I got a refurb replacement device for my broken 8800 and am looking at adding the microsd card and when I opened the bracket it came off. I was able to put it back but I'm concerned that it's broken and won't be able to lock the card in place.

Thanks, I almost broke my Christmas present and company's Blackberry. Pic's and verbal instructions except for the connecting part....it took a few minutes to figure out you have to manually connect to the computer. Anyway, for most people it would have been perfect. thanks again.

I NEVER sould have seen that metal bracket as a 'loader'. You are genius!

Wow. THanks a bunch. I was trying to insert the card for 30 min prior to seeing this post!!

Yes, thanks for the crystal clear instructions !

In case anybody needs compatibility info, I just successfully install a Kingston Technology 4GB Micro SDHC card in my Blackberry 8830 (World Edition via Verizon).

It was immediately recognized, and created the folders for music, video, pictures, and ringtones automatically.

Thanks! Exactly what I was wondering!

Why must RIM always, always always, always be different and as awkward as hell. Normal card readers like every other device has are simple and intuitive. True to from make it awkward!!!
