P2K Commander won't recognize my phone

Some quick tips for any of you out there that are having problems getting the P2K Commander software to connect your Motorola V3 phone (RAZR compatible) to your PC computer.

If P2kCommander dont recognize your phone please make sure to check the following:

  1. Make sure you have the latest version of P2k Commander software. It can be found here.
  2. You must be running at least one of the following operating systems: Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, Microsoft Windows 2000, or Microsoft Windows XP SP1. There have been some successes with Microsoft Windows Vista.
  3. You may need the Microsoft USB patches installed, although not required if you are running Microsoft Windows XP SP2. (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?amp;amp;displaylang=en&familyid=733dd867-56a0-4956-b7fe-e85b688b7f86&displaylang=en )
  4. The P2kdrivers must be installed, which are bundled with P2K Commander after version 2.8.
  5. If your phone is connected by USB and P2kCommander is started, try to connect your phone. The new devices must be appear and you must be point the p2kdrivers path to load it on your system.
  6. "hidden folders" which are not shown in filelist but are shown when viewing the phone: These are empty folders.
  7. P2kfilesystem does not show empty folder, but the phone does. To remove recreate the folder and delete it.(the folder not the files)

Thanks for the great info. I still had trouble getting drivers installed. But I got it working by downloading version V3.3.5. This one had the drivers in it. Once all the drivers were installed, I was able to open the latest version of P2K and it worked fine!

dont worry about it!
the most important´s try!

fresco viejo, lo primero es tener el programa adecuado,te aconsejo la version 4.9.8,debes bajar los driver´s de la version 2.8 y primero activar el programa y despues conectas tu cel.
yo tambien soy colombiano...fresco!

Ken, Thanks for the awesome postings. A comment on step #1 and #4.

After downloading/installing the latest P2K 4.9.8 from your list I was having trouble getting the other P2kdrivers for my Razr V3r. I eventually realized that not all zips have the driver bundled. So looking at the file sizes. I noticed that 4.0.0 is 280kb vs 4.9.0 being 130kb. So I download 4.0.0, unzipped the drivers, let the wizard install 4 times and got 4.9.8 to work!!! Lesson learned is that the drivers may not be bundled in every release. It's now obvious to me when I look at the file sizes... btw - I'm on winxpsp2. Excellent blog!!!

Great find! I had not looked at 4.9.0 was that much smaller. Looks like everyone needs to grab the 4.0.0 version to get the drivers you need to make the phone work.

Glad it worked for you!

I think I'm having the same trouble as everyone else, but I don't understand the advice you're giving on how to fix it.

My phone will charge when plugged into my laptop (I'm running vista), but nothing will read the phone at all (yes, the phone is on). However, if I turn the phone off, then on, I get a split second message telling me that the USB device is broken. If I click that, I can tell it to look for drivers (I don't know how to install drivers outside of clicking this message! The phone doesn't read in my device managers, or in Add New Hardware). BUT, when it looks for drivers, it tells me that the drivers are "already up to date" for the "Unknown Device."

Help would be appreciated! :)

One of the recent problems with the P2K Commander software is that the point versions DO NOT include the drivers necessary to connect. The latest version, as of today is P2KCommander 4.9.C. In my post describing that, I also publish a link to the P2KCommander 4.0.0 version that includes the drivers. That post is here, I hope it helps!

When I try to run the p2kcommander.exe, I get the good ole "P2kCommander.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." DEBUG, SEND ERROR REPORT, DONT SEND

I have the latest drivers and all that good stuff. Anyone else having this problem or can anyone fix it?

Hey, i installed the p2k without a hitch, and the phone gets recognized, as well as charges.

However, it doesn't display that any files are present on the phone, the litte "a" file thing.

I restart the phone, it says that there is one attached, and "reads" it, but nothing ever shows up in the left column of the transfer software.

I'm not sure whats wrong, because my phone obviously has pictures, contacts, etc on it.

I have a Razr v3, and Window 2000, if that helps.

Thanks!

That /a partition can be a problem for some people, I would recommend changing changing a couple of items by going to 'Options' on your phone. The first would be the read speed -- trying either the standard or safe modes. And the second would be to change to the other partitions which include /b (transflash) and /c i398 user partitions.

Great Info thanks alot, the only problem I am having is that after I transfer the files to my computer (wxpsp2) I cannot view the pictures. I can't find any of my programs to open it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would use the built-in Microsoft Photo Editor or you could even open the pictures with Internet Explorer. Otherwise you can open with a 3rd party program like Paint Shop Pro or Adobe Photoshop.

im having problem getting driver installed. i got 4.0 with drivers, and i also tried drivers from motorola site. only device that recognize is modem. nothing else pops up for install. i tried drivertool in p2k 4.0 and it just reinstalled modem driver and thats it. i have a silver razr from cingular. i have tried on both xp as well as vista 32bit.
with modem driver installed, you can charge your phone thru usb but nothing else.

I have done everything from the step-by-step guide and even downloaded the version 4.0.0 for the drivers and I still can't get P2k to read my phone. It does charge though. I keep getting "Volume name fail!" and "IO Failed" and "CMD: Answer wait timeout!" I am trying to run 4.9.8 but still can't get it to pull any of my filled off my phone. Any ideas? I have a V3c. I have tried the /a, /b, and /c directories with no success.

I really appreciate the concept of this but apparently am not following something quite right. I have installed 4.9C, 4.00, and 4.9D but still am getting the following:
"Tci command set: 3G
GENERIC FAILURE.
Volume name fail!"

When I installed 4.00 I got the "P2k Mobile" as a drive option. However with the other two versions I get several gold star options including "P2k phone seems" and "P2k Phone system". None of these give me an "a/" drive to look on. Any direction or insight would be appreciated.

FYI: Running MS XP sp2

My MS Windows doesn't even detect my Motorola RAZR V3. The little bubble doesn't even pop up, what may be my issue?

Anonymous said...

The only driver that will install is the modem driver. This allows the phone to charge, but nothing else.

I am starting to think the phones from Verizon are missing something in the firmware. I can get it to charge, but can't get P2K to read files. I get Errors like "USB IO Timeout". Any thoughts?

Anonymous said...

for those who are receiving "no p2k device found" or "usb: io-timout" try starting p2k commander first and then connect your phone to your computer. this would only work if the drivers are already installed. BEWARE: not all drivers are in all of the zip files that you might have downloaded. the drivers are from 3.2.2 but you can use a newer version of the app.

I have successfully downloaded the P2k program, I think it was V 4.0 so I could get the drivers. I have a V3 Razr from Cingular. However the drivers are only 2.3 instead of 2.8. I installed the program correctly but when I open it to start getting the files from my Razr the P2k Commander "encounters a problem" and has to close. What is the fix for this as I have seen other users with this same problem but no solution has been posted. Thank You for all your help so far.

cant get P2k to work as intended, in dropdown box, there is no choice of mobile phone, only phone system, phone user, etc. lower left column says device found & phone connected, other information as well.. what am I missing? all I am trying to do is delete a corrupt file which (I believe) has blocked me from adding or deleting ringtones

Thanks for posting a very helpful bunch of articles. I had lots of trouble trying to get P2K Commander to read my Razr V3, but eventually it did. For those who have problems, I had initially installed the latest V3 drivers downloaded from the net. So my PC would install the V3 as a Motorola USB modem, and sure enough, it charged when I plugged it into the PC. However, P2K Commander wouldn't recognise it whatever I did (it would just have an error message saying no P2K device was connected when I selected the phone). So, I tried various things, and what seemed to work was installing P2K Commander V4.0.0, Going to the P2kDrivers_2.3 directory, and running DriverTool, which installs P2K Commander's drivers as well. Then I downloaded P2K Commander V4.9.E, pulled the entire USB cable from the computer (this seems to make a difference rather than just taking your phone out of the cable), and plugged it all back in again. Then I ran P2K Commander V4.9.E and it finally detected my phone! Hope that's some help to those of you still having woes - I personally object to Motorola being so greedy as to force you to buy the Tools when other phones let you drag and drop - so thanks for all the helpful articles Ken, and for everyones useful comments.

I have a Verizon V3. My PC recognized my phone as Motorola USB Modem #7 although I have only this modem. I have used MPT and works ok transfering pics and vdos, but no for transfering .mp3 files or ringtones. I have tried P2k 3.3.5 and 4.9.E but none see my phone. Instead I got -> USB: IO Time-out! CMD: Data write fail! and Volume name fail! messages.. Any suggestions on how to solve this problem? DG

WinXP SP2 prof. P2k gives a "P2kCommander.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." error when it tries to load my V3c. What did I do wrong? I am using v.3.2.2.

Thank you.

For anyone having trouble with the RAZR V3XX, try going to Options and selecting "P2k/P2k05" instead of "P2k05 over USBLAN". I messed with drivers and different versions for hours, only to find this was the answer.

OR ....
Just activate the cell phone blue tooth then take a Mac laptop, turn on the blue tooth there and poof... in a few seconds you'll see the content of your phone on your Mac screen (after entering any pass key in both devices).
But then again, if you want to go the hard way, help your self with Windows.

Alan Stocks Post on 12/19/2007 is right on the money. Finally after days of trying to get P2K Commander to recognize my RAZR V3, I finally had success after following his instructions. He is a genius.
