Cozumel from Cancun, A Little Farther than Expected

Today we were initially expecting to head down south from Cancun, Mexico to spend the day around Cozumel. However, after a little bit of research last night – we found the trip to be a little more difficult than we initially expected.

When reading tour books, as well as looking at the geography of Cancun in relation to Cozumel it seems that it would be very easy to get to Cozumel from Cancun. That is simply not the case. Although there is a port or dock just north of Cancun – Puerto Juarez, it only services ferries to Isla Mujeres and not Cozumel.

The only way to get to Cozumel via ferry is by journeying to Playa del Carmen, the only port or dock that services Cozumel. It is approximately 30 miles south of Cancun – halfway to Tulum / Xel-Ha and is relatively expensive to get a service down there. Either it is $65 each way for a taxi or $65/person for a round trip on an air conditioned bus. Relatively expensive just for transportation to drop you off at Playa del Carmen.

Having spent a couple of days this week in the air conditioned buses, we elected to skip Cozumel on this trip to Cancun. Luckily, we also remembered to cancel our reservations with Hertz on the island of Cozumel. Instead, we will be spending the day by the pool and head into Cancun for some shopping.
