Nintendo Wii: How to Hard Reset it! (Soft Reset too!)

In some cases, you may find that your Nintendo Wii is behaving badly. It seems that most of the problems have come from older games (Gamecube or Wii Channels), or possible from the Wii Internet Channel. In that case, you want to perform a soft reset or even a hard reset on your Nintendo Wii to bring it back to factory conditions.

The problem? Well, resetting you Wii is not necessarily obvious.

However, you Ninetendo Wii can be reset in a couple of differnt ways and this may restore some reliability if your Nintendo Wii is either freezing or locking up on you.

Here is how to reset your Nintendo Wii:

1. First, the easy way. A soft reset of the Ninetendo Wii. If you Nintendo Wii has just started acting up and there is no reason to perform a hard reset then follow this instruction. Simply press the reset button and hold down for 2 seconds on your Nintendo Wii Console.

2. Now, for the more advanced hard reset. Interestingly, the Nintendo Wii has NO hard reset facility to be accessed through the machine or via buttons. The ONLY way to hard reset your Nintendo Wii is to UNPLUG it for 5 minutes. Once it is unplugged it resets itself and your badly behaving Nintendo Wii should be restored.

Note: By hard resetting the Nintendo Wii, it will not delete any information on the SD Card that is used for storage. If you wish to delete this data, stick it into a computer with a multi-media card device or a digital camera and reformat it.

Did this tutorial work for you?

It'd be helpful to compare the various reset methods to PC equivalents, for the new gamers. - ImagineReason

I have a problem with my Wii
I updated it and now I can't play any of the older games (sports, zelda)
I reset to factory settings still same problems and I can't even copy my saved games from my SD cards

The hard reset delete all the memory on the wii internals?

I find this hard to believe ... then everytime you transported it during a move, to a parents/friends house, or if you turned off the surge protector (if it was plugged into one), it would always go back to the old settings. I am trying it now because mine seems to be bricked ... but I have no high hopes for this.

Yo, Anon. That's a symptom of using PAL region code settings on an NTSC coded TV. Switch your setting- or your TV- to fix!

Okay.

I have an older TV--2007 Phillips.

It has a spot for headphones, yellow, and white for plugs.

I first plugged in a cord that is used for HDTV---it has like 5 color cords (used the green and white/yellow--I forget) and then 3 bigger ends on the other.

It would only show up Black and White. Sound was fine.

Then, I went into settings and changed it to "HDTV" setting---to see if that would help the color------it changed it to have a black and white screen of SNOW----I can't see ANYTHING now. Sound works, but NO picture.

What do I do???????????

Thanks.

Okay, so whenever I play a game, it'll play perfectly for about 2 minutes then the screen will go black and say "An error has occured, blah blah blah." Other times it won't play at all! I tried resetting and just letting it cool down, nothing works!! HELP!!!!! :`(

Same problem as earlier posts. Black screen although Wii powers up (green light). Also the disc lights up blue but no video output. Any tips?

If your Wii powers up but shows nothing on the screen try holding the power button down until you see the screen come on. Worked for me when I thought I had bricked it.
Hope this helps people.

Worked for me. I had unplugged the Wii for a few days with no luck. Unplugging the AC adapter from the power strip for about 5 minutes was the trick.

The Netflix channel from a used Wii will not allow me to delete the previous settings so I can put my code & password in for my account. Previous owners info is there. I have removed & downloaded the app & still no change. Is there a fix?
