The BCS Gave Us This? Let’s Start Over.

Since my disgust over the announcement of the BCS Championship game of Ohio State Buckeyes and the LSU Tigers, I have ignored a lot going on in college football. Apart from those living in Columbus, Ohio (like Josh) or in Louisiana – the rest of the country realizes how much of a joke the BCS (Bowl Championship Series) has become. Even more so this year – in fact, I was just looking at the list of bowl games today and became even more disgusted.

Here is what we are looking at today -- all times are eastern standard time(EST):

Outback Jan. 1
11 a.m. Tampa, Fla.
Wisconsin vs. Tennessee

AT&T Cotton Jan. 1
11:30 a.m. Dallas, Texas
Missouri vs. Arkansas

Gator Jan. 1
1 p.m. Jacksonville, Fla.
Virginia vs. Texas Tech

Capital One Jan. 1
1 p.m. Orlando, Fla.
Michigan vs. Florida

Rose presented by Citi Jan. 1
4:30 p.m. Pasadena, Calif.
USC vs. Illinois

Allstate Sugar Jan. 1
8:30 p.m. New Orleans, La.
Hawaii vs. Georgia

Tostitos Fiesta Jan. 2
8 p.m. Glendale, Ariz.
Oklahoma vs. West Virginia

FedEx Orange Jan. 3
8 p.m. Miami, Fla.
Virginia Tech vs. Kansas

Seriously? Are you kidding me? This is supposed to be the greatest day (or at least 2-3 days) in college football. These matchups are far from that.

First there is the championship game. LSU vs. Ohio State? Can we please pick two less deserving teams? LSU squeaked by a mediocre at best SEC conference this season with two losses, and only dominated their non-conference schedule. Ohio State did not play anyone all season long and lost to Illinois. I guess USC will have to wait until next September to beat Ohio State.

While I would prefer to make an argument for the USC Trojans in the BCS Champtionship game -- there are 2-3 other teams more deserving than LSU or Ohio State – Oklahoma, Georgia (who LSU never played), and Virginia Tech to name a few.

Then there is the Rose Bowl which is perhaps the most frustrating. How did the Rose Bowl committee pick Illinois instead of Georgia? While the Sugar Bowl did have the rights to Georgia, the Rose Bowl committee could have at least asked – which they never did. Had USC or Georgia won, there could have been a case for a split national championship.

What a shame for the granddaddy of them all – USC vs. Illinois. Even USC vs. Hawaii would have been a better match-up. Mark Schlabach at ESPN actually has the nerve to suggest the Illini have a chance against the USC Trojans. What is he thinking?

Probably the only intriguing game of the day will be Georgia vs. Hawaii. It’s somewhat of a trap game for Georgia – much like Boise State was for Oklahoma last year. Win big, and you were expected to – lose and the whole SEC comes down yet another notch. Should be great to see Colt Brennan put it up 75 times.

Let’s all hope for a BCS re-working this off-season. The selection committee had been bad in the past, but this year it is just plain awful.
