Fixed! All Wii Remotes will not Sync!

This post is one of several on how to fix problems with your Nintendo Wii. To see the entire list, click here for the Nintendo Wii Repair Guide.

If you need to sync up all of the remotes, you can possibly run into an issue where the remotes will not sync. However, some of the other Wii remotes to keep their sync. In this case it has to do with the time-out during the one-time sync mode.

Here is how you fix the issue:
When syncing or re-syncing Wii Remotes with One Time Mode, if you wait between syncing each Wii Remote, each new Wii Remote you to sync will take longer. This can cause one or more Wii Remotes not to sync at all if too much time has passed.

To avoid this, quickly press the 1 and 2 Buttons on each Wii Remote during the sync process, in the order in which you want to the player numbers to be assigned (1 through 4). Too long of a pause can take the sync longer, or prevent it from syncing all Wii Remotes.

Hi, I have a major problem, my wii remotes will not sync at all. I have tried all two methods you have on your site and neither helps. I have a wiikey installed that has not been updated in a long time. Please help bud, thanks.

I have the exact same problem as the other guy.....my new wii remotes will not sync at all....my old one broke, so now im stuck with two new ones that i can't even use.

we encountered the same problems and were able to fix it with the following instructions:

Step1Turn on your Wii console. While on the HOME screen, press any button on the Wii Remote. If the 4 squares on the bottom remain dark, change the batteries (or for a rechargeable Wii Remote, place it on the charger for a while).
Step2If the 4 squares blink blue, then stop, your Wii Remote is not synced. Press the 1 and 2 buttons at the same time. This should connect your Wii Remote if it's been synced before.
Step3If your 4 squares still blink blue, then stop, these last steps will do the trick. First, on the front of the Wii console, just underneath the disc slot, there is a small panel that opens down. Open it and press the small red button.
Step4Open the battery panel of your Wii Remote and press the small red button. Replace the battery panel and observe the blinking blue lights. If 3 stop blinking, and 1 remains lit blue, your Wii Remote is synced with your console. Make sure to secure the wrist strap, and have fun!

i have followed all 4 steps, and none have worked at all.all i seem to get is four flashing lights, and then zero flashing lights.i beg to argue against your 'helpful' hints,as none of them seem to work.ive also read disappointing comments from other persons that have used your website.thanks for gettin my hopes up.all the best

If you are using nintendo power packs and docking station if you need to resync your wii remotes you must fit ordinary batteries into your wii remote for it to be able to send the sync signal.

I tried everything at least 20 times. Nothing worked. A few times my wiimotes synced for about five seconds, then desynced again, but other than that nothing.

On behalf of the rest of us who did get help from this post, THANK YOU!! It was nice of you to spend the time to help us out!

Using batteries instead of the rechargeable power pack is the trick it took for me to get a sync...sfter the sync, put the rechargeable back in the wiimote was still synched...so that was the trick for me...AA batteries!

I want to thank you for this help site for the WII. Both my handsets would not sync with the console and reading through the hints I got both back in sync. Thank you for your help.

I cannot get anything to work. Ive tried the AA battery trick as well. I have four wii remotes that wont do anything but flash all four blue lights for roughly 30 seconds and then shut off. Please help...

I had trouble getting a third remote to sync. Reading this blog and the comments from others helped. Here is what I did:

1. I pushed the red sync button on the console.
2. I resynched my first remote (which had been synched before) by pushing the red sync under the battery cover.
3. I repeated steps 1 and 2 for the 2nd remote.
4. I repeated steps 1 and 2 for the 3rd remote.

Pushing the 1 and 2 buttons to sync didn't seem to do it. And I also had AA batteries in my 3rd remote (rechargeable battery packs for the other two). I don't know if this would have worked if I had a battery pack for my 3rd remote, but since I just got it, I don't have a 3rd battery pack yet.

Hope this helps someone.

I just purchase Wii Resort (MotionPlus was included) and one extra MotionPlus. Both my boys were able to play at the same time yesterday but not today. Only one remote syncs up, the other will not. I am wondering if it has to do with the MotionPlus attacment. It's very frustrating! I tried the red button on the console and then the red button on the remote. I've also put in new batteries. My boys are arguing because only one can play at a time! Help!

Okay I tried this and it worked right away. Unplug the power cord to the we console and let it sit for 30 sec. then plug it back in and do the sync steps and that will work.

Sneha said...

I've tried but Wiimote won't sync with console!

Sneha said...

1) Unplug Wii console wait 30 Sec.
2) Remove batteries from Wiimote wait 2-3 minutes.
3) Plug & Turn On Wii console.
4) While Health & Safty screen is on(DON'T press A), Press both remote & console sync together.
5) Sync next remote.

It works!

thank you, michael. after searching many posts using your instructions we were finally able to resync our controllers!!

BuckXtreme said...

Well as far as I'm concerned, there is only ONE post that worked for me!

USING "AA" batteries instead of the charger pack allowed me to sync every controller again.

Sorry your name was Annonumous too... I would have given you KUDOS!!!

Anonymous said...

Yea, thank you! I needed to unplug power (thx sneha) and then the red sync buttons did the trick.

Thanx!
After many attempts I finally was able to sync our remotes by pressing the red button on the console and the 1 & 2 buttons on the remotes.
Thank YOU for taking your time to explain us how to do it.

Follow the instructions in the Wii manual. That's what worked for me. 1) Unplug the wii and take out the wiimote batteries for a minute.
2) Plug back in and replace batteries.
3) Turn the wii on
4) At the "health warning" screen, press and hold the red sync button on the wii for 15 seconds.
5) Proceed to sync each remote by the normal means:
a. press the sync button on the wiimote, then immediately
b. press the sync button on the wii

Don't use the "one time" sync protocol at home, it only works for one time - thus the name. It's for when you're using your wiimote at a friends house. You can sync for the one time at their house, and your default sync info remains intact.

Thanks! After unplugging the wii console and taking out the batteries, leaving it for half hour and starting from scratch it worked perfect!

Had to work fast though while the health warning screen was up... even without pressing a it was moving on to the normal screen.

cheers!

@sneha

Thanks! YOUR INSTRUCTIONS WORKED!!! I tried everything, and was about to give up, when I came across your comment. Thanks again!!!

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up. I tried and retried several and nothing. Even after reading this. I did not know that I had to actually point the darn wii mote to the receiver!! I hope your not having the same problem. HAHAHAHAHA how dumb of me.

Anonymous said...

none of this works. my wii controllers only blink blue, then stop. Once in a while it will sync and i could play games but soon later it will not work again. help

Anonymous said...

w4ik: Thanks! I was getting SO frustrated that my Wiimotes wouldn't connect and your AA battery thing actually worked! My brother makes a good point though: maybe it's just the action of taking the battaries out then putting the back in agan.

Hi I think this is a new one? I can get the remotes to sync from help screen or the main menu but when I select the game disc I want to play and select start the remote immediatley loses its sync. the way around it at the moment is to press the reset button then do a re synch (whilst at game start) which then gets it back working!! when I return to the main menu from the game then it loses its sync again having to press reset and re synch again!!! this problem has only occurred since I downloaded the new software 4.2e can anyone help PLEASE

Anonymous said...

I have tried all the sync suggestions. I can get the remotes to sync, but as soon as I put a game in and it press start - I loose the sync during the the instructions about using the wrist strap, etc. I can go no further. Any suggestions?

Using the red reset buttons on the console & remotes followed by 1+2 on the remotes worked for me. Was able to play Madden with multiple players. Have not lost sync yet. I synced the remotes using AA batteries and then switched to rechargeable packs, and remotes did not lose sync. Thanks.

Thank you Dragon Slayer! your advice helped and after weeks of trying everything else your post worked for me!

Thank you so much for this whole thread. I think I tried every single one of them. I am not 100% certain which one of them really did it, though, there was an area where while you are in a game, you can click on the wiimote and reconnect, I did that, got the new remote to sync and stay, then did it again (may have done a few more red button syncs first) and then it finally synched the original wiimote as the #2. It only took about an hour!!!

Anonymous said...

ok so i held down the sync button on both my wii mote and my wii console and i also held down the one and two buttons my controller turned on but when i tilted it slightly away from the censor bar it turn it self off, does anyone know whats going on and how i can fix it

you have literally wasted one minute of my life, this does not work in the slightest. Nice one nitendo.

Thank God I found this thread!! I couldn't get my remotes to sync for nothing. Read the manual, tried the steps over and over, I even did the suggestions by many from this thread. I finally unplugged the power cords waited 30 seconds then did the steps to sync and it WORKED!! Thanks so much for all the wonderful suggestions!! Mr. Anonymous THANK YOU!

Just did Steps 3 and 4 today - 4/4/2010. They worked perfectly for 4 remotes!!! The first synced at light "1", then "2", etc. Thank you very much for this forum. Like I tell my family often, you can find help for anything on the internet.

Step3- If your 4 squares still blink blue, then stop, these last steps will do the trick. First, on the front of the Wii console, just underneath the disc slot, there is a small panel that opens down. Open it and press the small red button.
Step4 - Open the battery panel of your Wii Remote and press the small red button. Replace the battery panel and observe the blinking blue lights. If 3 stop blinking, and 1 remains lit blue, your Wii Remote is synced with your console. Make sure to secure the wrist strap, and have fun!

Can Only Connect 1 Player

Ok. I had this problem for 3 or 4 days. I have 2 wii-motes and could only get 1 to connect. One of them is Nintendo brand, the other is Emtec brand. I could get both to connect but not at the same time. Here's what I did:

Sync up 1 player. Sometimes it takes a little bit. If you have trouble turn your wii off, unplug it for a minute, turn it on. On the Health screen press the "Sync" button on the Wii, then press the "Sync" button on the wii-mote.

Now, in the main menu (with all the channels) hit the home button then go into the Wii-mote menu (at the very bottom of the screen). Hit the "Reconnect" button. The player 1 contoller will disconnect. Then just press "1" & "2" at the same time on the 1st controller and after that syncs up, press it on the 2nd controller. This worked for me after trying everything else I could possibly think of. Hope this helps you.

Found out that if you are running the Netflix software, only one remote will stay connected. Thought I had a problem with another remote as it wouldn't stay synced, but when I went back to the Wii Menu, it synced up and stayed connected.

"New batteries" for sync is the trick. I up and running. What is interesting is that your suggestion for pushing the console first and then the red button on the handheld is backwards from the instruction book, but it works. Thanks

My first three remotes will sync and operate fine. When I sync the 4th one, it will vibrate and appear to connect for a few seconds then it turns off. It does this regardless of the batteries, etc. Any suggestions?

Thanks this HELPED a ton! My kids lost the Wii remote that was synced as #1 and I couldn't get the others to sync! But your tips really helped! Thanks for saving my workout this morning!

I just wanted to put my 2 cents in. I was very frustrated with the instructions on this topic. But I continued to try. I followed all of the steps from pressing 1 and 2 together while holding down the console sync and when that didn't give me the lights that I needed, I went right to the sync button on the remote - while still holding down the one on the console. All the lights were still blinking. SO, before I completely gave up, I was so pissed off that I started to press the console's sync button off and on - while still holding down the remote sync and VoilA!!! the single blue light popped on and stayed on! I immediately did the same with the second remote - and although it took some time - Bang! It did the same thing. So, pulsing the console sync button while holding down the remote button seemed to be the trick for my remotes. Good Luck!

Anonymous said...

My will remote wont sync the second remote and it turns on for a awhile but it just turns off
Well the remote just blinks
I tryed to reset but it didn't work

Anonymous said...

This is the trick. I tried for 30 minutes everything. then when I did this and went through the red button sync the remote finally synced up. thanks.

My mom, little brother, and I tried your steps but none helped. It seems we are in the same situation as others and none of your steps could help us because our wii remotes were synced just two days ago but now for some odd reason they are not. As calm as I may seem i am filled with frustration that you could not help with many of everybody's problems presented here.

THankyou to all the previous contributors without your help I would not have got this to work

This is how I got the romotes to sync

Get your kids to stop playing Wii then
1. remove power to Wii
2. remove power to remotes
3. turn on power to Wii unit
4. place batteries in one controller
5. press the red button under the hidden flap on wii controller when the health warning comes on
6 press the sync button on the remote under the battery compartment
7 remote will sync in as number one
8 remove batteries from this remote
9 grab next required remote and power down wii unit.
10 repeat steps 3 to 9 until all required remotes are synced as number one.
11. make sure all required remotes have batteries in them
12. take the last remote you synced as one and press home and select reconnect
12. Now do not use 1 and 2 but rather press the sync button in the remotes battery compartment one at a time as each one sync's up to a corresponding number.

Hope this helps someone as I got all 4 remotes to sync through trial and error eventually
