Fixed! Wii - "Unable to read the disc" / "Disc could not be read" / "Eject the Game Disc" Error Message

This post is one of several on how to fix problems with your Nintendo Wii. To see the entire list, click here for the Nintendo Wii Repair Guide.

Your Nintendo Wii may be experiencing some issues if you are getting one of the above error messages:

"Unable to read the disc" / "Disc could not be read" / "Eject the Game Disc" Error Message

In order to get your Wii working properly, please ensure that you are properly loading a Game Disc.

Here is an image on how to load the Nintendo Wii disc properly:

Fixed! Wii - 'Unable to read the disc' / 'Disc could not be read'
If your console is placed vertically, the disc label will face to the right.

If your console is placed horizontally, the disc label will face upwards

If you know you are inserting the Game Disc correctly, but are still have the same problem with only one game (or if you only have one game), try cleaning the Game

Disc by following the disc cleaning procedures (click here).

If after reading the above information you are still unable to play a game disc, please call Nintendo Customer Support at 1-800-255-3700 to discuss available options.

I had the same issue, I just called up the number that Ken mentioned above. The wii sports disc is under warranty along with the console. They will replace it as long as you send them back the damaged CD within 21 days with the shipping package provided by them.

You can also get this error if there are scratches on the disc. To fix this problem go down to the local Rogers store and buy magic scratch dovctor to repair the damage. The discs will then read like new again.

FYI Disc cleaning.
No need to buy anything special.

Get a tube of plain white tooth paste, no pizzazz just plain jane stuff. Get about a dime's worths' dab on 4 corners of the disk then slowly and deliberately take a soft cloth and rub the paste into the cd. Start from the center and swipe straight to the edge and restart a few inches over until you've covered the whole disk. Once done it will fill any small superficial scratches.

I have tried everything! Cleaning the disc, making sure I put the disc in right, cleaning out the wii, everything! It still says UNABLE TO READ DISC! I am about to go crazy! I have tried like 4 wii games and they all don't work! Do you have any tips?

Sounds like a problem with the Wii or the DVD player. You may need to have it serviced.

which will cost you almost as much as a used wii. if you've had it for more than 90. unlike Xbox which fixed my 360 for free even though I've had it for years. good luck either way I'm still trying to get my wii fixed for less than the 87 that nintendo qouted me.

Sounds like your DVD player is going bad or possible your laser is dirty. I would recommend cleaning the DVD player. Otherwise, it may need to be replaced.

My Wii won't play my Wii games or the new one I just bought. But it most certainly will play gamecube games, even if they are scratched to hell. Anyone understand this one?

We are having the exact same problems...our Wii will play GameCube discs, but not Wii.
We own the lens cleaning kit and have already done that.

I've just purchased "Prince of Persia - Rival Swards" and it wont play on my Wii. It makes some strange little clicks wile trying to read the disc. All the other games I have run just fine (and no clicks).
I then tried it on a friends Wii and it played just fine. Both consoles have the 3.3a Firmware version.
Any ideas? Tks ;)

I had similar problems with both my PS1 and my Gamecube. Try placing the console on each side and then load the game.

I live in India. Had my brother-in-law gift me Nintendo and Wii sports game.

My brother who came from Canada brought with him Wii Resort with motion plus and Yoga games.

It seems that the new games from canada won't play. I called the US customer service and was told that the unit have to be recoded to allow to play canadian discs.

Why doesn't Wii units have capabilities to play international discs?

I'm having a similar problem. My Wii spin any discs. I think I've figured out what the problem is, though.

Last time I took it apart, I moved the lense all the way back, then I inserted a disc. When doing this, it actually spins the discs, but it won't read them.

I may just have to get a lense cleaner, but I don't know.

I was playing some gamecube games on the wii and tried Mario Kart: Double Dash when the wii said that it couldn't read the disk. I've tried to clean it and it's the only game that doesn't work. What should I do?

don't put "Fixed!" in the title if the article is some common sense copy/paste from the nintendo website. There's no info on how to 'fix' a broken wii

My Wii just suddenly quit for no reason. I was playing modern warfare and then it just went blank and the Error Message occurred. I tried it with several games and the same message came up. I even tried letting it cool down, but nothing seems to be working. Any suggestions?
