Canon Rebel XTi 400D ISO Speed Comparison

Today I was the first time I took out my Canon Rebel XTi 400D to shoot some photos. Part of the purpose was to capture the quality that the camera could produce out of the box, with the stock EF-S II 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens that came in my 400D kit.

For this particular post, the pictures here represent the range of ISO (ISO 5800:1987) available on the Canon Rebel XTi. Here are the details of the shoot:

  • Location: Bell Tower at Cal State Channel Islands (CSUCI), formerly known as Camarillo State Hospital.
  • Equipment: Canon EOS Rebel XTi 400D with a EF-S II 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens, no filter.
  • Focal Length: 18mm
  • Setup: Tripod
  • Shots: Full Automatic, Landscape Automatic, Program AE mode for ISO 100, ISO 200, ISO 400, ISO 800, ISO 1600 taken over a 1 minute period. All photos use automatic focus.
  • Quality: L (10.1 Megapixels / 3.8MB) - not RAW
  • Processing / Touch-up: None. Only internal Rebel XTi JPG processing.
The quality was not shot in RAW or RAW+L mode because I will also be comparing these against my Powershot G7 photos which is also the reason for the 18mm focal length. The original image is scaled to 1600x1200 (by Blogger, without asking), all the other images are cropped at 1280x1024 at the center of the picture and shown at 100% when opened. Shown on this page is 400x300

What did I learn? First, the fully automatic mode looked great -- and shot at ISO-400 which can be expected for the lighting conditions. I was surprised that the landscape mode went to ISO-100, fairly drastic change from the fully automatic. However, it produces the highest contrast and most color in the sky.

What do you think about the photos? Anything of note?
