Fixed! Windows Update Error 8024200D Installation of KB947562

My dad recently purchased a Windows Vista 32-bit upgrade for his Dell Vostro 1400 laptop. The desire, to upgrade to Vista Home Premium from the installed Vista Home Basic software that came with his Dell computer to utilize some of the advanced features that come with Vista Home Premium.

Luckily for him and me, the software arrived just a couple of days before our visit. That meant that I could help to set the software up -- given it was an upgrade, it should just take a few minutes to setup. While in a separate post I will talk about the upgrade and how easy it was NOT, I also ran into an error while preparing for the upgrade.

The error was with Windows Update, and anytime I tried to install KB947562. Each time I tried it out, windows greeted me with the following error message:

Failed: 1 Update
Error(s) Found:
Code 2042200D

It looked like this on his PC:

This even happened after rebooting and shutting down all running applications on the machine. That meant that it was time to figure out what the issue was and how to fix it. I did a quick search on Google for "8024200D failed KB947562" and did not turn up much. But luckily, it did point me to the Microsoft KB article,, where I could download the full version of KB947562 from the Microsoft website.

After downloading the full file version for Vista, Windows6.0-KB947562-x86.msu -- I proceeded with the installation.

After the execution of the full file installer, the installation of KB947562 was completed without issue. The lesson learned? If any automatically install files from Microsoft Windows update fail, just search for the appropriate knowledge base (KB) article and install the full file.

I followed your steps, but it said that this up date does not apply to my system. Do you have any idea why?
