DiCAPac-410 Underwater Case for Canon

If you're like me, when you participate in various water activities whether it is white water rafting, snorkeling, or swimming -- you often want to capture the moment in pictures. While it may seem like a simple problem, generally speaking the options you had in front of you had been relatively limited.

Two of the most common options that people thing about are...

1. Buy a cheap "waterproof" camera like the Kodak Sport Single Use Camera (link here). However, the quality is generally questionable and without the digital camera functionality, you have limited exposures, expensive developing costs. In other words, getting the shots you want are how might you say...unlikely.

2. You can buy a waterproof case for a Canon Camera, which for the Canon SD800IS is the WP-DC9 @ a cost of $240. (link here) That's a little steep -- more than the cost of the camera -- not to mention it is not compatible with my other Canon Powershot SD790IS. That requires the waterproof housing Model WP-DC24, at another $240. With the rate I change camera, definitely not the best investment.

But, there is another option that is made by the company "DiCAPac" (link here)which is a soft case alternative that you can get off of Amazon.com (link here) for less than $30. It's waterproof up to 10m (approximately 30 feet) and certified by the standard JIS IPX8.


While a Velcro and Zipper system was initially a little concerning for me -- with my "extra" digital camera...I was willing to take a risk. I went ahead and bought the DiCAPac-410 (link here) and it had the added bonus of being compatible with both cameras.

The case arrived in time for our recent trip to Hawaii and the most important thing to do with it is to run the initial tests to verify that it passes the submersion test. I tightened the lens cap and placed the paper towel inside the case and held it under water...success!

I was ready to now test it out on the camera, and below is a picture with the SD800IS inside the DiCAPac-410 -- a great fit and I was ready to go snorkeling with the camera!



At first, it feels a little bulky but then you get used to the outer soft case. I snapped a couple of quick pictures while I was on the deck of the boat (link here). Then I jumped in the water for my Snuba session with the camera.

Overall, I was extremely pleased with the performance -- and the camera came out without getting wet and no damage -- evening with heading down to 20-25ft below the surface. What was really cool was that as the pressure increased with the depth, the case collapsed around the camera for a great snug fit. When using the camera in the DiCAPac-410, it felt almost like the real camera.

If you're thinking of taking some photos on an upcoming snorkel, water adventure, rafting or a shallow scuba excursion -- I would highly recommend the DiCAPac! Below are a couple of the photos that I took while underwater.
