Fixed! Vizio LCD Problem Vertical Line in Pixels (VU42LF)

The Vizio LCD FHDTV television that we have had up in our bedroom had been working great for the last couple of years since we purchased it on a Coscto special about 22 months ago. It is a 42" LCD TV, with 1080p resolution -- model VU42LF.

The reason I used "had" been working great is just a few days ago while watching -- Ashley mentioned, that blue line down the middle is annoying. I thought, what blue line...I do not see anything. But, then changing viewing angles -- I could clearly see it -- a one pixel wide blue line running the entire length of the screen. From top to bottom.

It kind of looked like:
One pixel 1 wide vertical line in the HDTV LCD Screen for the Vizio VU42LF

I was not panicing yet, but I first changed the TV channel. The blue line was still there. Then I reset the DVR receiver. The blue line was still there. I then change to a different device using a different connection mechanism -- DVD and Component vs. HDMI. The blue line was still there.

I was beginning to panic.

I turned to the Internet and searched Google and the results were not encouraging. Not encouraging at all. In every case I found, the situation was some sort of damage to the LCD, irreversible and requiring either a costly repair at $400 or replacing the television altoghether.

And of course the warranty on the TV was only for a year -- that would be par for the course.

I was trying to figure out what to do, whether I should look for a new television, see what new LCD screens costs and do DIY repair. While thinking, I fired off an email to Vizio technical support to perhaps get more information.

Resolved to waiting, I was just standing in front of the television looking at the blue line and I did something odd. I just tapped on the line where the one pixel wide blue line was...and it disappeared. It was not really hard, just a tap...tap...tap with my finger and the television was fixed.

Now I am not sure if this works for red, green, black, or white lines in a LCD television, but for some reason it worked for me. If you are having an issue, I would suggest giving it a try. It may not work, but hey -- what do you have to lose?

Good luck!

Unfortunately it didn't work on ours. The warranty was up just a few weeks ago and the blue line showed up today!

that was amazing. i tried tapping the lcd screen itself and didn't work but then tapped the plastic part bordering the lcd screen and after a couple taps (not hard) it started flickering different colors and then disappeared! who knows if it will come back. at least its gone for now. until i can convince my wife for a new tv. lol. thank you! good luck!

I had the same issue appear on my 52" Vizio after a move from AZ to TX. Amazingly, THIS WORKED!!! Thank you very much! Saved me having a huge fight with the moving company.

Had the same issue with a "purple line" running vertical, probably 10-15 pixels inside where the SD/HD aspect cut off is.

Mine had been like that for 2 or 3 months but would always seem to go away after it heated up.

I tapped it and nothing happened, tapped the plastic border, nothing. Then I tapped back where the line was and it was gone.

Who knows if it's a long term fix or not but it's something.

Certainly if your TV is under warranty contact the manufacturer first but this does seem to work if you fix the right spot.

Had the same issue with my 47" Vizio. Came across this first on Google. Worked Great! Thank you.

Incredible, I took your advice and it worked. My Vizio 32" tv had a thin blue horizontal line that just appeared, I thought for sure i'd be looking for a new tv. I first tapped the screen itself no good I then tapped the frame no good, I then gave it a good smack on the back directly behind the line and presto it disappeared. Thanks for the assist..

I tried this on my 37" Vizio 1080p that I purchased 3 DAYS AGO! The blue line is still there and now a horizontal multicolor line is starting to show up. NOT HAPPY!

LOL!

I had red vertical line on my Toshiba Regza Z3030D 47" and this trick worked for me! Thank you so much!

Did this red line come because of stuck pixels? I noticed that it was located right where my desktop backround ends and black area starts.

Hahaha yeh it worked. Cost me quite some violence against my noble tv friend, but the 5th slap on the back of the frame fixed it. Lol.

Wow I can't believe this worked, I had a red line n tapped it on the screen n it went away after the 3rd time. Thanks for the advice!!!

I work in IT and had this sort of line traveling down my Vizio screen. After reading this article, I thought that it was the most ridiculous attempt to fix an electronic device that I had ever come across. Curiosity got the better of me and I marched right up to the screen and tapped on it. It was like a miracle. My RED line was, and still is, gone!

I had the same problem, a thin blue line from top to bottom on my Vizio 42" LCD. I tapped on the line and on the plastic border of the screen at the top and again on the bottom of the screen, then along the entire length of the line. At first it seemed to have no effect, but then a couple of days later, the line is gone. I can't believe it!

Oh mah gad! I was freaking out when it happened too! Usually after work I hop on my pc and turn on my tv w/o even a glance.
But for some reason, when it came on, it made a really awkward sound (like a dial-up modem sound). So I looked, and BANG! There was a weird purple line. Freaked out after my first google attempts showed nothing but ppl with the same issue. Then I came here, and BLAMO! it works! Wow thank you good sir. You are definitely a man amongst midgets (no offense to midgets)

Wow - this works! My tv was a little more stubborn than most. When I tapped the actual screen nothing happened. Then when I tapped the left frame (nearest the line) the line changed colors from blue to red to green and then a thin white line. I then began tapping on the back and noticed that I was getting more reponses from the line. Finally I got brave and tapped it twice rather hard at the very back top edge of the set while holding the front with the palm of my hand. This worked and the line is now completely gone, even when I turn the set off and back on. Thanks a bunch! Now we'll just have to see if the problem returns or not...hopefully its gone for good!

Amazing! I have a vizio 42xvt3d led tv. It was just purchased about a month ago and just today a thin 1 pixel wide horizontal line appeared. I had no idea what to do! So, I googled what I could do to fix it and after searching for an hour I stumbbled upon this site. So, I tried it out and nothing worked. I tried it again but with a little more smack to it on the edge of both ends of the lines and voila. It worked. Thank you so much for the advice.

My 42 inch Vizio LCD is about 3 1/2 years old and got a very thin vertical white line, but it doesn't go across. I was already thinking of purchasing a larger HDTV prior to this issue. I guess I won't be purchasing Vizion again though.

Anonymous said...

you people must work for vizio cause that tapping crap doesn't work!!

Vizio sucks and its suppose to be the best tV wrong! I have several lines so I will try this and let you'll know what happens! Cant wait to get home and try it out

i have a vizio 32in a 2007model & this "screen tapping remedy" is official. how many taps it will take is to be determined. but after tapping on the line for a few minutes-i powered the unit on and off a few times and the *red vertical line* was gone...lets c how long it lasts.

I have a 47" Vizio and the dreaded "Purple Line" appeared. It is only 14 months old. This trick did not work. It has a purple line on the left hand side of the screen from the bottom up about half way up. I am so mad. Obiviously with all these people having this problem there is a flaw in the Vizio LCD products. There should be a class action lawsuit to demand they recall these TV's.

Never buying a Vizio again.

Nice!!! I have a 26 inch vizio with a few lines running down. I tried this and it worked for a while, but once I moved the TV again, the lines came back.

It has got to be a loose connection on a board inside of the TV somewhere. I'm going to save this thread, attempt to track it down, and re-port.

I'm glad I found the post. Will try and see if it will work for me, else I'll tinker with it when I take it apart...awesome!

Wow it worked for my Vizio! tap 5 times on screen up and down and bam it was gone. Thx!!

Anonymous said...

It worked! You just have to be patient and creative with how you tap...I watched a youtube video where a guy tried it and it didn't work...but I tried his same method and pattern of tapping...at first it did no good, but I turned the tv off and on and could see the line wanting to reform as the screen was black and attempted to tap it out before the picture appeared...suddenly, the line was gone. My suggestion would be to tap up and down, in many areas, and turn the power on and off while doing so. Good luck!

This worked!!!!!! Awesome!!!

I was willing to try anything to wipe that look off my hubby's face when the dreaded blue line appeared on our tv. We started by tapping the screen: nope. Then tried the outside edge: still nope. He gave up, but I'm stubborn. I put my palm on the screen and gave the back a good thwack right behind where the line was. Gone, just like that! Thank you, thank you! I want to add that my tv is NOT a Vizio, it is a Samsung, so this fix is NOT brand specific! I'm very very pleased!

It totaled worked for me! I have a thin green line running vertically across my 55 inch Vizio LED TV. A few taps on the line made it disappear.

I have a 1 year old Vizio Led tv and the same problem. thin vertical line down the left side. I attempted to tap with my finger all over and nothing. I ran my finger along the bottom of the screen and with just a little pressure the line would disappear, but return as soon as I lifted my finger. So, I grabbed the ole pocket knife (closed) and tapped on the frame just at the bottom of the line. aha it is gone. I dont know how long it will last but feels great right now :)

I have a larger Vizio - 65" 3D which I bought at Sam's about a year and a half ago and did not, stupidly, buy the extended warranty. Turned on the unit today BAU and there was what at first I thought a black line down the entire vertical length of the unit on the left side. I changed channels to make sure it wasn't just the broadcast and that didn't work, then turned the unit off. When I turned it back on the line was gone. I then turned it off after a while, went to the store, came back home and turned the TV back on and sure enough...the line was back. Upon closer look it was actually three lines, all very close togther, standard RGB (red, green, blue) lines. Just out of sheer frustration I gave the TV a whapp with the butt of my hand on the frame of the TV above the line and one of the lines went away. I did this three more times and all lines were gone. I paid a LOT for this unit and can't afford to replace it. If it persists I'll be calling someone to look at it. Even at $400 to repair it's still much less than the cost of a new TV. But if you're having this issue try the butt of your hand at the top of unit on the border and cross your fingers.

This worked for me also on my Vizio 32". Thank you.

Good!! just give it a good smack on the back - top area of the TV.

I have a $3k 60" Sony that is just over 2 years old. It just developed a line 2 days ago.

I googled the problem and saw people talking about rubbing on the screen where the line is, so I did that. After 2 or 3 minutes of random rubbing near the spot, the line went away, but 2 hours later it came back. I tried some light tapping, but it didn't work.

So I hit up google again, and found this post. So I went back to the TV and I tapped it a few times on the bottom of the front of the frame right below where the line was, and nothing happened. Then I gave it one stern tap with my finger in the same spot, and the line disappeared.

I just did all this ten minutes ago so I'm not sure if it will return, but if it does I'll post an update. Awesome post and comments, thanks for everyone who's contributed.

I had this line problem after laying Samsung LCD tv face down on carpet. I was panicking after reading various posts saying the screen was now dead.
luckily came across your fix & hey presto three light taps & the line just vanished, can't believe it, thank you.
